Educational Programs

                                         EDUCATION PROGRAMS
All Education Program areas offer various topics which are linked to the New Ontario Curriculum. Programs are available for preschool through to high school.


Program Planning Information
 
FEES
$9.69 + HST = $10.95 per student (Full Day Program)
$5.72 + HST = $6.45 per student (Half Day Program)
One teacher will be admitted free of charge per class as well as all Educational Assistants and student teachers. Two parents per class will be admitted free of charge per class.

PAYMENT
The payment for your program is due on arrival, before the start of your program. Payment can be made by cash, cheque or Visa. Cheques are to be made payable to "Country Heritage Park". Country Heritage Park will not invoice.
LUNCH FACILITIES
Students should bring NUT FREE bag lunches. We promote a "boomerang" lunch program where we encourage schools to take all food and packaging back to the school There are no restaurant facilities available. Indoor and outdoor eating areas are available and are assigned to each group by the Education Coordinator.
CANCELLATION
Your school will be charged 50% of the booked program price if cancellation is made less than 10 school days before your scheduled school visit.

EDUCATION PROGRAM

All education program areas offer various program topics which are linked to the New Ontario Curriulum.  A tractor ride is included in all program areas offered (one ride per class is guaranteed).  We are wheelchair accessible and can offer limited French programming upon request.


PRIMARY
JK/SK - Animals

Observation through Exploration - Students will visit our farm animals and make a craft, as well as learn about the sights and sounds of the farm. Jump around in our log barn haymow and play in the corn box. Make a fun craft to bring home.

             

 

Grade 1 - Science and / or Technology

Understanding Life Systems (Needs and Characteristics of Living Things) - Students will visit resident farm animals and learn how the farmer helps to meet the needs of the animals; as well as various other farm related activities. You will meet Mrs. Lucas in her 1860's home and see how much fleece one sheep gives her for spinning into wool. In the Dairy building you will make butter from cream. A craft is included during the programming time.

Understanding Structures and Mechanisms (Materials, Objects and Everyday Structures) - Identify the many structures and their uses on the Country Heritage Park site. Help to build a log fence or cabin. Discover why fences have different designs. Visit our bank barn and the animals that call it home. Design a blueprint for the octagonal barn. See our amazing honey bee exhibit and learn how they build a beehive. 

Grade 2 - Technology and/or Science

Technology - Understanding Structures and Mechanisms (Movement) - Students will demonstrate an understanding of movement and ways in which simple machines help to move objects through some hands on activities. In the John Deere building you will experience a new and innovative program featuring pulleys and gears. View and investigate simple machines (screws, wedges, levers and more) in the Templin Carriage Works. "Butter" is it oscillation or rotation that makes butter better? Find out in our Dairy building. 

  

Understanding Life Systems (Growth and Changes in Animals) - "Good Food Grows in Ontario". Students will visit our resident farm animals and investigate the similarities and differences in the characteristics of various animals. Identify how animals respond and adapt to their environment. Visit Mrs. Lucas in her 1860's home and investigate the cycle from sheep to shawl. Take home a craft  made by you!

Grade 3 - Social Studies and/or Science

Heritage and Citizenship (Early Settlements in Upper Canada) - Students will visit a crossroads community and explore a farmstead, school house and businesses within the community. Visit Mrs. Cassin in her 1830's log house and experience life as an early settler. See how they prepared their food and lived off the land.

Understanding Life Systems (Growth and Changes in Plants) - Students will discover various types of crops (corn, wheat, soybean and apples) while visiting buildings to learn what plants need to grow.  Each student will also plant a bean seed to take back to school with them. Learn how rope is made and why fibre is your friend.

Urban and Rural Communities - Emphasis on rural communities is showcased and can be compared to your urban setting back in the classroom. Students will visit various buildings and compare the vast greenspace of our rural area to their urban developments. At the Lucas barn you will experience the work that need to be done each season in order to provide food and a living for early settlers. Learn about farm animals compared to domestic animals and complete a craft to take home

JUNIOR

Grade 4 - Technology and/or Science

Understanding Structures and Mechanisms (Gears & Pulleys) - Students have the opportunity to examine the basic principles and functions of pulley systems and gear systems while visiting various buildings on site.

Understanding Life Systems (Habitats and Communities) - Students will learn how humans are dependent on plants and animals and vice versa. A visit to the resident farm animals is included to learn about their needs.

Grade 5 - Technology

Understanding Structures and Mechanisms (Forces Acting on Structures & Mechanisms) - Students will spend full day, half a day in small groups discussing, designing and building a bridge that can support a load, while also learning about compression and tension.  The other half day will bring them to an 1860's home to experience how stress and compression are used in a familiar setting, the kitchen of Mrs. Lucus' home.

Grade 6 - Technology

Technology - Identify the different types of motion of mechanical mechanisms.

INTERMEDIATE
Grade 7 & Grade 8 - History

Confederation - Students will learn about the Fathers of Confederation while also investigating the development of the railroad and how this made trade easier for early settlers.

HIGH SCHOOL

Grade 9 - 12 - Science


Food and Nutrition - Today's busy lifestyle influences how we as a society use animal and plant products for modern food production . This program focuses on changes and improvements in food production technology, as well as the many uses of animal bi-products.
